noun

Definition

Preventative Maintenance is the practice of overhauling, repairing, or replacing items at a scheduled interval, regardless of the condition of the item at the scheduled time. Predictive Maintenance is often a form of Planned Maintenance. Since having the necessary equipment, personnel, and time set aside to perform visual inspections is critical, Predictive Maintenance is performed as efficiently as possible when practiced routinely. If components or parts look worn or deteriorated, time is usually set aside in Preventative Maintenance inspections to replace or remedy those parts while access is readily available.

Related terms: corrective maintenance, shutdown maintenance, predictive maintenance, planned maintenance, non-routine maintenance, tear down, overhaul, downtime, turnaround, outage
